Fire Extinguisher Refill vs Recharge: What’s the Difference?

Fire Extinguishers: Refill vs Recharge – What’s the Difference?

Fire extinguishers are essential safety tools, but they don’t last forever—especially after use or prolonged storage. One of the most common questions we receive at Tesla Fire Systems is: what’s the difference between a fire extinguisher refill and a recharge?

Refill vs. Recharge Explained While the terms are often used interchangeably, they’re not exactly the same.

  • Refill refers specifically to replacing the extinguishing agent (the powder, water, foam, or gas inside the unit). This is typically done after the extinguisher has been discharged.
  • Recharge is a broader process that includes refilling the agent and re-pressurizing the extinguisher to its correct PSI level. Recharge also includes inspecting, cleaning, replacing worn parts, and verifying that the extinguisher is operational.

When Do You Need a Refill or Recharge?

  • After Use: Even if you only discharged the extinguisher briefly, it must be recharged.
  • Low Pressure Reading: If the gauge is outside the green zone, it needs recharging.
  • Annual Inspections: A technician may identify wear, leaks, or pressure loss that require service.
  • Hydrostatic Testing Due: Every 5–12 years (depending on type), your extinguisher must undergo testing. This is usually paired with a full recharge.

Why It Matters An improperly charged or partially empty fire extinguisher can fail during an emergency. That’s why Tesla Fire Systems offers professional recharge services across Canada. We use certified equipment and follow all NFPA-10 and ULC guidelines.

Can I Recharge It Myself? No. Fire extinguisher servicing must be done by trained professionals with the right tools and certification. DIY methods are dangerous and not compliant with insurance or safety standards.
